SELF-REFLECTION JANUARY

Harriet Marcilla

Whether you spend your last day of the year dancing your memories away or engaging in a day of self reflection, News Years is a holiday that everyone celebrates in their own fashion. The dimming of a past year's fire ignites the beginning of a new one.

There are people in the world that decide to look at December 31st as another day of the week, while there are others who see it as the last day before a chance to transform into the best version of themselves. The most intriguing part of this holiday is that its purpose is reliant on perspective.

Person A could have New Year plans consisting of consuming whatever's capable of temporarily replacing the year's memories that they are ever so fond of. Person B uses their New Years as a time to re-evaluate their feelings and engage in a day of self care. Some of us have managed to catch ourselves repeatedly falling into the optimistic habits of person B. We're the ones who see New Years as more than a day to fill with empty promises that will expire by the end of January. We see a second chance and hold onto it as if it's our last dying breathe. Now that may be dramatic, but after the year we've had, I'd say we deserve it.

It's the last week of January...the last week of the first month to a second chance. This week is going to consist of moments of self reflection thinking about how much progress (or lack there of) you have made. You're going to find yourself persistently thinking about whether or not you're the same person you were a month ago. You're going to hope with every single optimistic bone in your body that you are not the same person you were 28 days ago. It doesn't matter if you suffocate yourself with hope, if you genuinely wanted to change, you'd recognize that it's going to take a lot longer than the span of a month to grow into the person you're hoping to be.

Now, it's the end of the month; you've had enough time to start growing. Where do you go from here? That's a question you can only answer with time. Did you find yourself content with the ounce of change you experienced this month or were you just in it for the trial run? If you are truly person B, then you've found yourself beaming with a newfound felicity this week. Your aura is screaming with colors that you couldn't pick from any crayon box, because that one ounce of growth has taught you more about yourself than any trial or tribulation did last year. So here's to another day of embracing that second chance that you've held to your heart all month.
